Department of Music Education

The department places a great emphasis on offering quality undergraduate degree courses (single major or in combination with teaching programs or in the Popularization of Music and Organization of Music Life). These programs can be followed by a double major master’s program and then also by doctoral studies.

The activities of the department focus on the artistic, musicological and scientific research. Choirs have a dominant position in the art field (Girls Chamber Choir UJEP, Chorea Academica, NONA) as choral singing has a strong tradition here.

Members of the department are very active particularly in the art field. There are choirmasters from nationally and internationally successful choirs. The department cooperates closely with music departments in Poland, Slovak, Slovenia, Greece, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, USA etc.

The publishing of the periodical AURA MUSICA focused on the areas of music theory, history, interpretative and critical, but especially on teaching music belongs undoubtedly among the most crucial activities of the Department of Music Education. Part of this periodical are new compositions, choral arrangements, transcriptions and arrangements of popular repertoire that can be very well used in school practices.

The Department of Music, as a workplace with strong professional support, regularly organizes International symposia on choral singing Cantus Choralis, which has been, so far, attended by dozens of choirmasters, teachers and students from the Czech Republic, many European countries and the USA. The department also annually supports a competitive festival of choral music called Jirkovský písňovar.
