Signaling and Communication

The purpose of signaling is to clearly and immediately communicate what has happened and what will follow. In School PE, we recommend a basic set of signals and vocal commands that students can quickly understand; thus, utilizing the motto: "Simplicity is beauty." Generally, the following points can be used as a guide:

Net/Wall Games

Always start and end the rally with a whistle.

After the rally ends, show the signal and vocally accompany it with an explanation (e.g., calling "ball out").

Determine who will serve next (e.g., calling "service to the green team").

Striking/Fielding Games

Start the game with a vocal command (e.g., "play ball" or "play").

End the game (or the specific phase following a pitch and subsequent hit) with a vocal command (e.g., "stop" or "time") or a whistle.

fter the play ends (or during its course), show the signal(s) and vocally accompany them with an explanation (e.g., calling "run scored, red team").

Determine what follows (who is batting next, etc.).

For both types of games, it is recommended to call the score aloud (especially if a scoreboard is not available). Details for specific SGs are provided in the respective chapters.
