Department of Art Education

We are here for students who have an interest in visual art, who like to create and who visit exhibitions, but who do not imagine their life to be solitary, in their own creation behind closed doors. They thrive on contact with others and enjoy being around both children and adults. They also like organisational tasks and liaising with people.

Personal contact with students is important to us. We believe that creativity can evolve with a good relationship between the teacher and the student that creates a space for the most important knowledge and understanding. We want our students to be active, to put their semestral works on display, to enter the Annual Award of the Head of the Department with their projects, to take trips with us and to see the latest events in the world of art. Also, we want them to learn about the cultural history and the treasures of both Czech and international galleries and museums.

We strive to organise an exhibition of the best works of our students in a prestigious gallery every year. We also organise a public BPDP show of bachelor and master diploma works. We organise a tour abroad at least once per academic year (Paris, Munich, Kassel, Cologne, Amsterdam, Vienna, Dresden…), we support students’ internships abroad. We invite interesting personalities from the world of arts, theoreticians, art teachers and other experts to lecture at our university. We support research projects of our doctoral students that bring interesting events and opportunities also for bachelor and master students.

Exhibition of final works “BPDP”

BPDP is a traditional exhibition of the final works of the students of DoAE. It is a unique event that puts the independent creative achievements of our students before the eyes of the general public, parents, colleagues, friends and, last but not least, the pupils and students of the schools that participate in the side educational programs to the exhibition. The event is a dignified farewell to their studies and at the same time the culmination of the students’ creative efforts and an opportunity to showcase to the general public the imaginary peak of the acquired skills, knowledge and experience, which is eagerly awaited by the entire department. The Department Head’s Annual Prize is also attached to the final works exhibition. It reflects our effort to motivate students of lower grades to their own creative or pedagogical activity beyond the limits of compulsory lessons and to enable them to realize their own project in the context of the exhibition. The realization of projects for the Annual Prize is supported by an special scholarship of the PF UJEP. On the opening day of the exhibition, the exhibiting students present their work to an expert committee of department members and guests. At the end, the committee will select and award the best artistic and art-pedagogical projects.

Summer School of Art Education

The event is intended for teachers of art education at all levels of schools and ZUŠ (primary art schools). It is accredited as an advanced training for teachers and is held in a fun way in two groups during one week (Monday to Thursday). It includes lectures in art education and visual arts. Prominent Czech artists are personally represented here. There are art studios where participants will try out a variety of activities – after a long time they will paint a picture, touch the experience with action and performance and creatively combine art techniques and materials. In shorter workshops, for example, they are introduced to the possibilities of using digital technology (e.g. GPS and tablet) in art education. Two evenings are devoted to discussions, sharing experiences, joys and concerns of the art teacher.

Excursions

Abroad excursions are an essential part of studying at DoAE. They include visits to prestigious museums and galleries, i.e. permanent exhibitions of European/world art and important current exhibitions. With the opportunity to view a very large number and wide range of artistic expressions from different time periods, students are encouraged to take a synthetic view of the whole, with an emphasis on noticing the deeper nature of creative artistic methods and approaches, as well as the interconnected contexts of different sites, rather than knowledge of data. As part of our foreign excursions, we have already visited Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hombroich, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, Nuremberg, Munich, Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Brühl, s-Hertogenbosch, Otterlo and others.
