Jan Čapek’s aim at this department is to cultivate the future teachers’ ability to read and think deeply and critically. His classes teach an awareness of literature as a complex representation of the inter-mixing of socio-historical values with subjective interests and human desire. His research and publications focus on representations of crises in the Gothic and Horror genre in literature and film, and his interpretative perspectives and approaches are heavily inspired by historical materialism, psychoanalysis, and post-structuralist thought.
Jan Čapek received his doctorate from the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University in Brno in 2022, where his dissertation was awarded the Dean’s award for excellent diploma theses. He has been teaching at KAJ as the Assistant professor of American Literature since 2022 and became deputy head of the department in 2024.
